About Dr. Jeffrey Fudin
Dr. Fudin graduated from Albany College of Pharmacy (ACP) with his Bachelor’s degree and his Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 1981 and 1998. He completed an American Cancer Society Fellowship in Oncology/Hematology at SUNY Upstate Medical Center. He is a board-certified Diplomate to the American Academy of Pain Management, and a member of several other professional organizations.
Aside from his expertise in pain management, Dr. Fudin has been nationally recognized as a federal whistleblower, activities for which he has received extensive national attention.
Dr. Fudin challenged the Department of Veterans Affairs in federal court for retaliation specific to his whistleblowing activities after he disclosed research violations beginning as early as 1993. For his role in defending the rights of Veterans, he was appointed Grand Marshal for the May 26, 2003, Albany Memorial Day Parade by the City of Albany Joint Veterans Committee. Some veterans wore T-shirts emblazoned with whistles and, on a rainy May day, blew whistles as Dr. Fudin and a pharmacist colleague led the parade. Three weeks later, on June 16, 2003, a New York State Assembly Resolution was adopted “honoring Dr. Jeffrey Fudin for his bravery and commitment to patient care.” (K1117 McEneny NYS Resolution)
The December 2003 Pharmacy Practice News quoted Dr. Fudin as follows:
“... ‘sometimes the battle chooses you, and the notion of choice evaporates under the glare of abuses so heinous that only a single honorable course of action is left. Sometimes,’ said Dr. Fudin, ‘there’s no way around [reporting] problems. You’re in a bad place at the wrong time, and you’re faced with a professional obligation to the patient. If you don’t do something in those instances, you have no business staying in the profession.’ He observed that the American Pharmacists Association Code of Ethics unequivocally enjoins pharmacists to protect their patients.”
On Super Bowl Sunday, February 6, 2005, Dr. Fudin appeared on the front page of The New York Times, where he was portrayed as a pharmacist hero for upholding the ethical standards of the pharmacy profession.
In addition to his whistle-blower status, Dr. Fudin is well-known for his expertise in Pain management. He was a peer reviewer for recently established American Pain Society Clinical Practice Guidelines for Arthritis, for Fibromyalgia, and for Cancer Pain and Palliative Care. He is a reviewer for publications and poster submissions for both the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) and the American Society of Health-system Pharmacists (ASHP). He is the current past Chair and founder of the ACCP Pain Pharmacy Practice Network group.
Dr. Fudin is a Medical Advisory Board Consultant member for the Danmiller Memorial Education Foundation, an online public service for pain practitioners and patients.
Dr. Fudin practices as a Clinical Pharmacy Specialist at the Stratton Veterans Administration Medical Center in Albany, where he has been employed since 1982. He is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Pharmacy Practice at ACP, and has been an Instructor of Pharmacology and Psychopharmacology at Sage Graduate School of Nursing for several years. He recently established a new teaching model whereby he has coordinated Pharmacy Resident instructors for an online course in Pharmacotherapeutics for Sage’s doctoral Physical Therapy candidates. He is CEO and founder of the American Pharmaceutical Care Pain Consultants, a private Internet-based pain resource (www.paindr.com).
Dr. Fudin has been an invited speaker on pain management nationally and internationally at VA hospitals and within the private sector, and at major academic medical centers throughout the United States. In the last year alone, Dr. Fudin has lectured on various pain-related topics in more than 20 states, advocating for the adequate and balanced approach of pain management in patients with the disease of addiction.
